Pointsettia Plants are a Christmas Tradition

Many people give pointsettias for gift during the Christmas season. While picking out your pointsettia here are a few things to look for.

•Choose plants with dark green, healthy looking leaves and bright (un-faded) bracts.
•The little yellow flower (cyathia) in the middle of a bract should be tight and show a little color.
•And most important, if the outside temperature is below 40 degrees, the plant should be wrapped or sleeved.

Poinsettias thrive on indirect, natural daylight, at least six hours a day. Protect plants from cold drafts or excessive heat. Keep moderately moist, but never allow to sit in water.

Many people believe pointsettias are poisonous, they are not. Many tests have been run on the plant and prove the old wives tale false.

Here are the recipes from our open house. We hope you enjoy all the yummy ideas listed here.

Blue Cheese & Chive Pinwheels
1 jar blue Cheese & Chive Dip
8 oz. cream cheese
1/2 cup mayonnaise
4-6 oz crumbled blue cheese
Soft Tortilla Shells
Mix 1st 4 ingredients together and spread on
tortillas - roll up and chill

Meatballs
5 lb bag of meatballs
1 1/2 bottles of Chipotle Sauce
(Blackberry or Raspberry)
Heat meatballs & drain grease - add sauce
and put in crock pot

Pineapple Habenaro Dip
4 oz Pineapple Habenaro Dip
8 oz cream cheese
4 oz shredded cheddar cheese
diced red onion
mix ingredients together & chill
serve with crackers

Corn Relish Dip
3 tbl spoon of sour cream for every 8 oz
Mix together & chill

Roasted Red Pepper & Onion Relish
Mix 8 oz cream cheese with 1 jar (12.5 oz)
roasted red pepper onion relish
chill - serve with crackers

Blueberry Fruit Dip
8 oz cream cheese
8 oz cool whip
7 oz jar marshmallow crème
1 jar of Maine Blueberry Preserves (can substitute
other kind of preserves)
Serve with grapes, strawberries etc.

Artichoke & Spinach Crab Dip
1 jar Robert Rothschild Artichoke & Spinach Dip
8 oz Crab Meat drained
1/2 cup Sour Cream
1/2 cup shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese Sauce
Place all ingredients in bowl and mix thoroughly

Mushroom Marsala Potatoes
5 lbs Yukon gold potatoes, peeled, boiled and
12 bottle Robert Rothschild Farm Mushroom
Marsal Sauce
1/2 cup Sour Cream
1 tsp Sea Salt
6 oz Parmesan cheese, shredded
4 tblsp butter
Mash potatoes - add butter and salt (can add a
little milk if potatoes are too stiff) Add remaining
ingredients. Mix well. Serve as side dish

Garlic Herb Pinwheels
1 pkg Wind & Willow Garlic & Herb Mix
8 oz cream cheese
1/2 cup mayonnaise
4-6 oz mozzarella cheese (finely shredded)
4-6 oz cheddar cheese (finely shredded)
finely chopped onions
Soft Tortilla Shells
Mix 1st 6 ingredients together
Spread on tortilla shells (can top with turkey or ham - Optional)
roll up and chill
Slice after chilled & serve

Spiced Pumpkin Bisque
1 cup Pumpkin Puree, 12 oz can
1 jar Robert Rothschild Farm Spiced Maple Pumpkin Dip
1 stick butter
1 cup Onion, diced
1/4 cup flour
1 cup heavy Whipping Cream
3 cups Chicken Broth
1/4 cup Brandy
1 each Bay leaf
salt and pepper
1/4 cup Toasted Pumpkin Seed (optional)
Sweat onion with butter on low heat. Add pumpkins degrees
Continually stir to prevent browning. Add flour gradually
stir to coat the vegetables. Add cream, Brandy, broth
and spices. Bring to a soft boil. Add Robert Rothschild Farm Spiced
Maple Pumpkin Dip, stir. Simmer 5 minutes or until thickened. Remove bay leaf.
Serve hot with a spoonful of toasted pumpkin seeds.
Optional: Puree the soup in blender, food processor or with hand blender.

Spirited Peach Cobbler
1 stick butter pinch of salt
1 cup flour 2 tsp baking powder
1 stick butter 3/4 cup milk 32 oz Spirited Peaches
1/2 cup sugar
Put stick of butter in 9 x 13 baking dish
and place in 350 degree oven. Mix all
ingredients except peaches together.
When melted & hot, pour batter into
center of pan and spread toward edges.
Spoon sliced peaches evenly around dish.
Pour any juice over the top. Bake at 350
degrees for 30 - 45 minutes. (until golden
brown).

Our open house is this coming weekend the 5Th & 6Th! Marcia has been in business for 41 years and would like to invite you to a party! There will be food tasting, recipes, and decorating tips.
A new line of roses called Exquisite Roses will be on display in an array of colors. MN grown Alstroemeria, gerbs and lilies are so lush and beautiful, you won't believe your eyes.

In 1970, forty short years ago - Marcia Schaaf opened her store
It was just 1000 square feet - At the time it seemed like much more
She worked hard and it began to grow - So she moved to a bigger space
She kept working and growing - In 1983 she moved to the current place
She had a thriving, floral business - When in 1987, Bud came on the scene
He jokes about their first date - And he's not saying this to be mean
But Honey showed up with a map book - With "5" addresses penciled in red
"Let's see how long it takes you to find them" - As I listened in dread
Hey! I'm just kidding - But you have to admit it makes sense
Now 24 years later - I can find any address with the utmost of confidence
Honey and I have been talking - And both of us feel pretty good
How long should we be working - Retirement is something we never understood
Do you retire and do volunteer work - Or get a job to fill in the time
Neither of us feels like - We're really much past our prime
Oh, we've gotten older - Just take a look at this old pic
The time slips by slowly - Then the years go by with a click
First, we'd like to thank you all - For your support throughout the years
We have many fond memories - As we've watched many of you grow in your careers
We wish you all a very happy holiday season - And may you have many more
As we say good-bye to 2010 - And welcome 2011 in with a roar
As for Honey and me - Schaaf Floral is where we'll be hanging out
Stop in and see us - We'll be working there without a doubt
As far as retirement goes - We'll keep you posted as well
We're going for at least ten more years - May "20" more, "Who" can tell

A Lion That Roars!!

Here’s to a Fridley Lion – Who has truly helped this club
He’s active, fun loving and funny – At home or in a pub
Lion of the year he’s won – At least two times or more
When it comes to spread sheets and numbers – His ability you can’t ignore!!

He’s presently head referee – Of the State High School League
In charge of the wrestling officials – A job with much intrigue
He started out at the bottom – After his college wrestling career
Always eager to lend a hand – He’s truly a Lion, he’s made that clear!!

But first let’s share some stories – About this well rounded guy
He’s literally a local legend – Not quiet, laid back and shy
On a trip to the wrestling finals – Lion Ron had a left handed car
That’s a car that wouldn’t turn right – I know this sounds bazaar!!

So down and back to Ames Iowa – Left hand turns were all he made
Dawn Meyers was riding along – So the truth in this case is hard to evade
Now back in his high school days – He wrestled for the state championship
If the match had lasted 5 seconds longer – Ackerman would have won, he had more zip!!

Told by a local wrestling coach – Who witnessed our man at the scene
Wrestlers are a funny breed – With a couple in our club, you know what I mean
Lion Ron has chaired the softball tournaments – That are run with precision and grace
Everything is on a spreadsheet – With every “I” dotted and in place!!

When the Fridley Lions ran into trouble – Not knowing what a budget was
How much we’d given to whom – And the club members were all a buzz
Up stepped the man with the spreadsheet – With a plan we all embraced
Set aside what you’ll need for the future – So we don’t end up broke and disgraced!!

Oh there’s just one more story – Lion Glaser and I heard this first hand
Lion Ackerman after a softball tournament – Picked up a hitchhiking, homeless man
He then took the guy bar hopping – There was just one hitch in this scene
Ron’s buddy who had ridden along – Had to call his wife who was not so serene!!

Lion Ron has also streamlined our new web site – To quote Lion Wiborg, we’ve gone green
What a beautiful job he’s done – You should all take a look on your computer screen
Lion Golden perhaps said it best - When summing up what he’s seen over the years
“This guy is so smart he makes it look simple” – Lion Ackerman never looks for cheers!!

So Lion Ron we thank you – You’ve been a great role model for all to see
Whatever you’re strength is, use it – I think each of us would agree

The wedding has been cancelled – Believe me, I wouldn’t cry

Just ask Uncle Neal or me if you will – What it feels like in a trap
That you can’t get out of – My God you’re one lucky chap!!

I know how your dad feels – Because we’re wired somewhat the same

Schaaf Floral History Or Why You Should Buy From a Retail Florist

It doesn't take a genius to figure out if you're ordering $80 worth of flowers and the person you order from passes the order on after extracting part of the money you are either not going to get $80 worth of flowers or the person filling the order is going to lose money. He's not going to lose money on the order. You are going to get less than $80 worth of flowers. Sorry! That's exactly what is happening in the floral industry, the Order Gatherers, (people who only have phones but no store) take orders by phone, pass the orders on to retail florists to fill the orders. They take their profit out before passing on that order. It's amazing that people put up with it, but they do. In YOUR defense, the ads these Order Gatherers have are very sophisticated and expensive, which is maybe why they have to take so much out of each order. Buy from your Retail Florist who has a store and you'll get a lot more for your money and be happier with your flowers. Forget the National Yellow Page ads, call your local florist.

When buying your flowers - A brief pause you should take

If it doesn't make sense - Your brain you should awake

If the man has no store - Just how is he going to sell

It must belong to someone else - A rat you should smell!!

It's like taking out an option - Here's an order for you

I need $80 worth of flowers - Now just what can you do

I'll give you $65 - Now make it look good

I promised them $80 - They'll never know in all likelihood!!

But that's not the case - As the public gets smarter each day

The Internet is fast - You're expected to do what you say

Know what you're getting - And that's easy to do

A little investigation - Should help you come through!!

Ask them, Where are you located - What's the local number you have

Where did your designer go to school - Don't try to be suave

Do you have a building - Is there a cooler inside

Who is your wholesaler - Are you taking me for a ride!!

They'll try to be evasive - But stick to your guns

You are the customer - Go on, have a little fun

Call up a florist - Someone in your town

Who actually has a building - Not some flower gathering Clown!!

Oh, I love the Internet - Don't get me wrong

You just have to be discriminating - To get through the throng

Look at it this way - It's deceptive at the least

It borders on being illegal - On the unknowing they feast!!

Oh, don't think of yourself as stupid - Some bigshots have fallen too

These people are slick - In the deception they do

They list a big discount - Now which of us doesn't want that

When it's too good to be true - It's time to smell the rat!!

So please be careful - And watch where you buy

In a discussion with ArTae Conforti, he brought up the issue of replacing flowers. ArTae is the master of common sense marketing so I listened intently. After the conversation I penned this rhyme, because as I have said in the past, it's easier for me to rhyme the words than to just write them. It makes sense though, we fight like heck for customers and when something goes a little wrong, our customers have to go away happy or we've lost them to someone else.

Think about this – One moment if you please
What a person goes through – This is not done with ease
To return your flowers – That did not meet the test
Follow the logic – You can see why they’re distressed!!

They have to box up the arrangement – Then put it in the car
Drive back to the your floral shop – Because that’s where you are
When entering the store – Say there’s a scowl on your face
Here’s probably what will happen – They’ll slam down the vase!!

But met with a smile – And a sincere “What’s wrong”?
Followed by “let me replace that” – With a caring voice that’s strong
For if they didn’t feel sincere – Would they have made the trip
To voice their displeasure – Or just to hear themselves Yip!!

It is part of the business – Sometimes things go awry
A flower wilts down – Or unexpectedly they die
That’s not the problem – But it’s an opportunity for you
You can use it to your advantage – If you know what to do!!

In front of you is a customer – Do you know what a new one would cost
You might have to calculate that – If this one is lost
Or with your face beaming – Tell them,”I can make that right
Let me replace your arrangement” – Then make it pretty and bright!!

You’ve not only kept a customer – But believe me the word will spread
I’ve got a professional and ethical florist – Because of the actions you exhibited
So remember this message – The next time an opportunity comes in

Art Conforti better known as ArTae by Bud of Schaaf Floral. He always gives some kind of nickname. I don't know what that's all about, but he does. Anyway, Bud and Marcia attended an AMS Conference in Sarasota, Florida last week that was hosted by ArTae, (now's he got me doing it) and by the following rhyme you can tell that they were duly impressed. They met a lot of nice people who shared the common interest of being Retail Florist's. AMS before you ask stands for Advanced Marketing Strategies. Sitting at the table from left to right are Mike and Renee Cox of Bloom Country Florist in Sierra Vista, AZ, Donna and ArTae Conforti, of Beneva Floral in Sarasota, FL, Steve Jacobson of French Florist in Los Angeles, CA and Bud and Marcia of Schaaf Floral in Minneapolis, MN. Now that we're done with the introductions, on with the Rhyme by Bud the Rhymer!

Like all of you before us – We signed up for Gravity Free
We went through the demo – Amazed at what we would see
So we set up the appointment – For ArTae and Tina to arrive
Teaching us the system – So we too might have a chance to thrive!!

I met them at the airport – Not knowing what to expect
This Italian with gold chains – And an accent easy to detect
Accompanied by a young woman – Too pretty to be smart
Until you saw her in action – My impression was wrong from the start!!

We went immediately to the store – ArTae wanted to take a look around
He started taking pictures – And the questions were abound
He liked our Candy Bouquets – And the front cooler display
He just kept asking questions – And this was at the end of the day!!

I took him and Tina to the hotel – With their laptops in hand
They wanted to get started – This is one driven man
I picked them up in the morning – And you all know the drill
For two days of learning – We saw our new web site come up with a thrill!!

That was the end of March – And we worked and worked some more
To get everything implemented – For Secretary’s Week was at our door
We sent out the Post Cards – ArTae said they would work
And they did help us – With internet orders it was hard not to smirk!!

Then it was right into Mother’s Day – Coordinating like you wouldn’t believe
Tina was on our speed dial – She helped our frustrations to relieve
How do you do this and how do you do that – We fought our way through
Things started getting a little easier – And that’s when we knew!!

We wanted to attend the AMS Conference – Which was maybe our smartest move

Hello everyone. That's right folks, I am The Man In The Jug and I am from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. I've been up here in Minnesota for about 12 years now so you can assume that I'm planning on staying. I was a spoiled kid with plenty of money that I squandered and fortunately I ran into Marcia Schaaf. She is such a lovely lady and so generous. She asked me what I was good at and I told her that I am an observer and recorder of events. She instantly thought it would be the perfect job for me to start a blog and record the happenings at Schaaf Floral. So here I am. I know, you are probably wondering about the unique name, but in just a minute you'll see why it makes sense. Get ready, because here it comes. Oh, and I also write rhymes pretty good also, so a lot of my news will be in rhyme which I think is just easier and more fun to read. Anyway, here's why I have the name I have. As you can see I'm not an outgoing kind of guy but I'm working on it. So lets get going on the news at Schaaf Floral.

What's going on at Schaafs?

Schaaf Floral has a new web site which is very user friendly and very efficient. What does it have? Well for starters you get reward point for registering with us. Registering with us means giving us your email address so we can stay in touch with you. Now don't get too nervous, we won't give your email address to anyone and we won't bombard you with emails. When you hear from us it will be offering you discounts and other good things around the holidays. I'm going to list the winners of our Lucky Stems drawings.

What are Lucky Stems??

Every bouquet that goes out of Schaaf Floral has a Lucky Stems on it. On the Lucky Stems is a number that you scratch off and check online on our web site to see if you've won. On the web site you'll find all of the participants such as Outback Steak House, Timber Lodge Steak House, Applebee's, Curves, Perkins Restaurant & Bakery and Old Chicago. How's that for fun. So far the following people have won: Patty Landis, Laurie Klom, Judith Carns, Melody Slathar, Debby Loring, Carol Hendrickson and Bill Walter. These are the folks that have claimed their prizes, but there are many more who haven't for whatever reason. They probably threw away the Lucky Stem by accident.
